German invaders take the spoils in UK first
Balver Mammuts, one of six German-based sides in the 16-team competition, took first place after overcoming fellow countrymen Funky Move Turtles 2-1 in the final.
A hastily assembled team from the TV series BBC Click formed part of the home contingent and Warwick-based UK segway polo founder Mark Weller said there were plenty of positives to take from the day.
“I’m really proud that the British teams managed to do as well as they did, considering they were only introduced to the sport last year,” said Weller.
Olaf Funke, chairman of the International Segway Polo Association and captain of the runners-up, shared Weller’s optimism, saying: “It’s been an incredibly successful tournament overall and a great indicator of things to come in the UK.”
The five British teams have now been invited to take part in the World Cup, named the Woz Challenge Cup after Apple co-founder and segway polo player Steve Wozniak, which is being held in Cologne in July.
