Mason and Burden both chip in to win Texas pairs event

Rob Mason and Tim Burden were well ahead of the field when they won Warwick Golf Club’s Roly Scandrett Texas Scramble pairs competition.

In the difficult pairs Texas Scramble format, in which teams played off one third of their combined handicaps and each player had to have nine drives, Mason and Burden shared the scoring equally to card a very impressive net 58 (71 – 13 = 58). Steve Slack and Lee Webb came in second with a net 61 (69 – 8 = 61).

Ian Jones, ten years a member of Leamington & County Golf Club, displayed his customary unflustered and steady play to win the 36-hole Club Championship on Sunday.

A morning round of 76 was followed by 74 in the afternoon in a competition played in extremely warm conditions.

The winning margin was by five shots and Ian also had his handicap reduced to two.

Leamington and County’s Ladies’ President’s Vase the winner in Division 1 was Liz Murdoch on 28 points, ahead of Tina Bruder, also on 28 points.

Third position was taken by Pauline Hayes (27 pts).

Division 2 had similarly close results with Liz Crowther taking the lead on 31 points, Helen Callow was second with 30 points, and third, also on 30 points, was Margaret Wilson.

Division 3 saw Julie Ford take the prize - 30 points, while Georgina Wilson carded 28 points to secure second place, followed in third place by Pauline Laidler on 27 points.

Adrian Riddell and Deborah Nicholls were crowned club champions at Kenilworth Golf Club on Saturday.

Riddell proved the model of consistency by carding four birdies in an opening two-under par round of 69.

He was not affected by the searing heat and followed up by claiming three more birdies in the afternoon for another round of 69.

Riddell’s 36-hole score of 138 clinched the coveted title by a convincing margin of nine shots from Ben Hammond, who posted rounds of 72 and 75 for 147.

James Lamond finished third with 149 (75 and 74).

Nicholls won the ladies championship, which ran alongside the men’s event, after carding rounds of 85 and 87 for an aggregate total of 172.

She finished two shots clear of runner-up Margaret Smith 174 (85 and 89), while Caroline Durbin claimed third place with 177 (87 and 90).

Southam golfer Duncan Childs won a limited-edition Boss watch after scoring a hole-in-one during a recent competition at Hellidon Lakes in Daventry.

The 51-year-old 15-handicapper scored his ace on the 165-yard, par three, 13th hole and was rewarded with a membership for the exclusive Boss Watches H1 Club and a specially commissioned commemorative timepiece.
