Pett holds his nerve over a mammoth six-hole play-off to clinch Finham Bowl

The Warwickshire’s Louie Pett won Coventry Golf Club’s Finham Bowl last weekend after a dramatic six-hole play-off.

Sixty of the region’s best golfers took part in the 36-hole scratch open, with Pett joined on a level-par 146 by Mike Desbury from Brocton Hall and Rugby’s Paul Godding.

The trio entered a two-hole play-off which saw the end of Dewsbury, but Pett and Godding fought on for another four holes of sudden death until 20-year-old Pett came out victorious on the 18th, sinking a four-foot putt to win.

Pett, who plays off plus 2, defends his Warwickshire Men’s Amateurs title next week at Stratford GC.

James Leggitt lifted the Don Boam Cup at Kenilworth Golf Club on Saturday.

The ten-handicapper overcame a shaky start, which included a double bogey on the opening two holes, to post an impressive round of 76, nett 66, to finish two shots clear of runner-up John Slater (85, nett 68).

David Machin (88, nett 70) claimed third place courtesy of a better back nine than Derrick Richardson (93, nett 70).

Stoneleigh Deer Park brothers Arnie and Chanon James will compete against some of the world’s best young golfers at the US Kids Golf European Championship which starts in Scotland on Tuesday.

Around 550 players aged from five to 18 from 35 nations will compete in Europe’s premier junior tournament to showcase the next generation of stars.

The championship is held on many of Scotland’s historic golf courses in East Lothian, with top finishers in each category competing in the Van Horn Cup at Luffness New Golf Course on May 30 - a showpiece event modelled on the Ryder Cup, where the best European players are matched up against the top golfers from the rest of the world.

Former Warwick club captain Ian Scandrett claimed a weekend double with victory in the Secretary’s Shield and the club stableford.

The strokeplay Secretary’s Shield competition was played at the picturesque Abbey Hotel, Redditch GC, where Scandrett’s nett 70 (82-12) gave him victory by one shot from Rob Buckingham, who had the best gross score of 76.

Liam McCarthy with nett 72 (77-5) was third.

At Warwick GC, Scandrett won the stableford by one stroke after scoring a fine 38 points.

Pete Hall and Rick Hughes were second and third after both scoring 37 points.
