Grand victory for England No 1 Sibley in Nottingham

Leamington's Kelly Sibley won the women's singles final at the Nottingham Grand Prix, battled through the strongest women's entry of the season to beat Italian Chiara Colantoni in the final.

Top seed Sibley avoided the worst of a tough draw which included the ‘group of death’ featuring Charlotte Carey, Maria Tsaptsinos, Emma Vickers and Yolanda King - all of whom have played on the international scene.

The English number one secured her progress with comfort, defeating Amelia Chan, Emma Torkington, Christina Wright and Beth Farnworth in straight games while dropping just the one end to Natalie Slater.

Sibley beat Emily Bolton in the quarter-final and then secured their place in the final with an 11-6, 11-13, 11-6, 11-3 win over English number 2 Tin-Tin Ho.

Sibley and Colantoni’s complimentary styles made for an entertaining title fight with both players happy to play away from the table .

The former Lillington Free Church player opened up a 2-0 lead before Colantoni fought back to win the third.

However, despite the Italian staving off two match points in the fourth, she eventually succumbed 12-11.
