Hancox plays above herself to claim runners-up spot in Burton

A quartet of Lillington Free Church players had outstanding weekends at tournaments in Burton and Milton Keynes, writes Phil John.

In the Burton Uxbridge 1-star on Sunday, Emily Beasley and Ciara Hancox opted to enter the under-15 category instead of the under-13s in order to gain experience.

Beasley played well to win one of her initial group games and was close to several other victories, while Hancox excelled to win her group.

She then beat Jessie Freeman, the number one seed in the quarter-final before hammering England number 81 Amy Bestall 3-0.

In the final she came up against England number 50 Zoe Hewitt and took a 2-0 lead before going down 3-2.

In the under-13 boys’, Robbie Fitchford finished second in his initial group behind England number ten Liam Williamson.

In the quarter-final he beat Yorkshire’s Jack Hewitt before overcoming Abishek Bathula in the last four.

He met Williamson for a second time in the final, going down 11-7, 12-10, 13-11.

On Saturday, Sam Weaving entered the under-17 and under-18 categories in the Milton Keynes 2-star event, winning ten of his 12 matches.

Weaving won his initial group in the under-17s before losing to Zak Dowling of Kent to finish second in his second group.

He then beat David Sharp in the 3rd/4th play-off.

Likewise, he won his first group in the under-18s and finished second in his next group, losing to Milton Keynes’ Matt Evans before overcoming Ed Simms in the 3rd/4th play-off.

Meanwhile, in the Leamington & District League, fourth-placed St George’s B held second-placed Rugby A to a draw in a thrilling Division One match.

Rugby’s Matt Outhwaite notched a hat-trick and won the doubles with Ryan Lines who won once but Mark Jackson and Ron Vose lifted their games to snatch braces and Luke Hobbins had a fine success over Danny Orr.

However, St George’s quickly came down to earth as third-placed Free Church A beat them 7-3 with 16-year-old Lee Dorning starring with three wins and the doubles alongside Timmy Cooper, who won twice.

Proud coach Chris Mulligan added one, with Jackson (2) and Vose (1) replying.

Two player St Georges A overcame Rugby B 6-4 with Lawrence Sweeney undefeated in singles and doubles and Damon Fenton taking two. Ryan Stockham added to the conceded points. Leaders Colebridge A surprisingly dropped 3 points to Wellesbourne for whom Alan Cotton was in top form winning two and partnering Gary Stewart to the doubles. Ben Willson’s three and two each from Kate Hughes and Mike Rinnhofer got Colebridge home. Rugby A beat Colebridge B 7-3 as Lines and Outhwaite took the points. Vikas Bakshi, John Chandler and Farooq Kakar all posted one for the visitors. County Council’s Phil Paine was in great form against Free Church B winning his three in a 6-4 success. Pat McCabe won two with Sam Weaving (2), Jeff Harris (1) and Sam Wiggins (1) responding.
