Henfrey and Corn take the top honours at finals day

John Henfrey and Jenny Corn were crowned the men’s and women’s singles champions at Lillington Bowls Club’s finals weekend.

In the closing games of the weekend, Corn beat Jane Crawley 21-14 while Henfrey overcame John Buggins 21-17.

Saturday opened up with the Welch Trophy which was won by Mike Davies, courtesy of a 16-7 success over Eric Murphy.

Philippa Mace, Alan Donaldson and Gary Laffey lifted the mixed triples with an 18-15 victory over Bernard Crowther, Pam Ponting and Dennis Lee/Malcolm Welch.

The ladies’ four-wood handicap was the highlight of the two days, with Crawley edging out Margaret Stephens 21-20.

Sunday’s competitions kicked off with the men’s pairs handicap, which saw a 21-17 victory for Alan Donaldson and Allen Harbour over John Rheams and Paul Wakem.

Crawley followed up her four-wood success with a 17-12 win over Liz Crowther in the ladies’ two -wood and the ladies’ chosen pairs went to Pat Gagg and Corn.

The Haesler Trophy went to Mr and Mrs Mike Kelly thanks to a convincing 23-13 win over Mr and Mrs Geoff Ward, with Rosemary Murphy winning the Ladies’ Captain’s Cup thanks to a comfortable 21-6 victory over Allison Cox.

Finally, Martin Preedy beat Alan Donaldson 16-12 to win the Colin Walton Cup, while Gary Laffey was crowned men’s singles handicap champion after beating John Rheams 21-9.
