In-form Chapman has the wind in his sails

Strong winds made it tough going for the 146 runners at the 44th Leamington parkrun.

Newbold Comyn regular Neville Chapman gained his sixth win in 18:33, coming home well clear of second-placed Leamington C&AC runner Pierre Guern (19:52).

Kenilworth Runners’ Clive Pearce claimed his best parkrun position in 61 attempts when he secured a fine third position, coming home in just under 20 minutes (19:59). Kenilworth team-mate James Griffiths finished 12th in 22:03.

Pauline and Tom Dable both headed their age categories, Tom with a Leamington PB of 25:01 and Pauline running 28:45.

Leamington C&AC’s Anouk Molliex was the first lady in 23:22 (20th overall), ahead of Deb Brookes (23:42) and Spa Striders’ Susan Cox (23:50).

Kenilworth Runners’ Pete Matthews had a fine run to finish tenth at the Brueton Park parkrun in 18:23, with Glyn Clarke finishing 27th in 21:15 and Ros Matthews 44th in 22:25.

Five Kenilworth Runners were at War Memorial Park for the 105th Coventry Parkrun.

Phil Fusi led them home in fourth, clocking 18:29.

He was followed by Jon Mettyear (21st, 20:05), Dave Ramus (34th, 21:30), Martin Belcher (62nd, 23:05) and John Woodrow (111th, 26:18).

Six Spa Striders took part in the fifth and final round of the Threshold Winter series.

The 10k course began with a stiff two-mile climb before a relatively easy finish as the route descended back into Illmington.

Trevor Wilkinson relished the hilly challenge to finish fourth and take the M40 prize in an excellent 39:12, with Richie Merrell just behind in eighth in 39:55.

Nick Adams took 46:37 and was followed by Justin Mallard, (47:52), Michelle Clements (48:58, 2nd lady and 1st F35) and Sean Lonergan (53:54).

Pete Matthews was the first Kenilworth Runner home, clocking 40:58 to claim tenth. Richard Green was 12th in 41:56, with Nicki Dove (58:50) 84th.

The race was won by Coventry Godiva’s Toby Spencer in a phenomenal time of 34:04, which put him four minutes clear of Godiva team-mate Emerson Coombstock.

Five Spa Striders stepped up their marathon preparations by taking part in the Bramley 20, near Reading.

They were led home by Melissa Venables in 153rd overall and ninth female in a time of 2:21:27.

She was followed by Nick Adams (2:28:58), with Caroline Whitehouse and Lucy Burnett both finishing in 2:41:54, just a second clear of Richard King.

 Registration has closed for the adidas Silverstone Half Marathon on March 11.
