In-form Tawney upbeat ahead of European Masters

Susie Tawney was the only Leamington C&AC representative at the British Masters Indoor Athletic Championships at Lee Valley Stadium in London last weekend.

The two-day event acts as a warm-up for the European Indoor Championships which start in Ghent, Belgium on March 16.

On the opening day, Tawney, 51, came third in the 1,500m in a time of 5min 19sec.

This was followed by the 3,000m on the Sunday in which she again won gold in 11min 21sec.

With little time to recover, she competed in the 800m where she picked up bronze in a photo finish, beating the fourth-placed runner by a mere two hundredths of a second.

Tawney will now make up part of the 400-strong Great Britain squad heading for Belgium.

“I am really looking forward to going to Ghent,” she said.

“I have entered the 800m, 1500m 3,000m and the 5k cross-country.

“It will be a very busy schedule with races every day.”
