Kenilworth Runners in a league of their own

Kenilworth Runners dominated the 2011 Warwickshire Road Race League, with the men’s team scoring maximum points in both the senior and veteran categories to win the team competition.

The senior men filled the top three in the individual competition, claiming first place in three of the five age categories.

The ladies’ team played their part in a successful campaign, with three individual third places in their respective age groups.

The league incorporated the cream of local road races, including the Two Castles and the Kenilworth Half, with the best six results from the nine races counting.

Richard Simkiss was the overall league champion, clocking two victories and four second positions to crown another excellent season.

He was followed by teammate Phil Gould and Connor Carson, who also dominated the V40 category with a perfect score of six victories.

Mick Williams was second in the V50 category and the club showed its strength across the generations with Tom Dable winning the V60 category and Arthur Smith taking the V70 title.

Andrew Holbrook finished third in the V40 category and Clive Pearce had an excellent run of results to finish fourth in the same age group.

The ladies’ team also had a solid campaign with Ros Matthews finishing seventh overall and third in the LV35 category. Sarah Stein finished third in the senior category and Pauline Dable was third LV55.

Fifteen members of Kenilworth Runners took part in the Brose Warwick Relays, where runners took part in multi-terrain laps of 3.3k.

The A team, comprising James Griffiths, Phil Gould, Phil Fusi and Pete Bryan ran well to finish tenth overall, with Gould running the fastest leg in 10min 35sec.

The B team finished 15th and the C team 24th, with the three-strong ladies’ team of Becky Smith, Sally Smith and Laura Gould coming home tenth in the women’s race.

Six Kenilworth Runners headed to Blackbridge for the second round of the Gloucestershire Cross Country League.

Sarah Stein headed the ladies’ contingent with a 51st-placed finish. Warren Bell was 100th and first Kenilworth finisher in the men’s event.

Clive Pearce and Barry Elkington celebrated joining the parkrun 50 club last weekend, clocking 19:58 and 22:33 respectively as their brought up a half-century of runs at Coventry.

Matthew Kingston-Lee finished third with a new best of 17:37, while Phil Fusi was fifth (18:17).

Two Spa Striders records tumbled at the ten-mile Great South Run.

Mike Ellis finished 78th in a new senior men’s best of 59:05 while Dawn Clark surpassed the senior ladies’ mark with her 69:31 gaining her 451st overall.

Three Striders ventured to Venice for the marathon, with Nick Adams coming home in 3:24:02, followed by Michelle Clements (3:31:29, 21st in age category) and Esther Wollaston (3:40:56).

Striders dominated event 29 of the Leamington parkrun, with Richard Shephard finishing first in 18:01 and Melissa Venables doing likewise in the ladies’ in 22:08.

 The Coventry 10k Charity Fun Run takes place on Sunday November 20 at the War Memorial Park (11am).

Runners can enter on the day between 10am and 10.45am.

Entry costs £10 and includes a medal and T-shirt for all finishers.
