Khalsa held after leaking late goal

Khalsa are still without a win in the Conference North after hosts Leek fought back to earn a 2-2 draw.

Khalsa started slowly and were under pressure from the start, conceding early on from a short corner.

Spurred into life by the concession, Khalsa forwards Gurminder Ghattaura and National League debutant Anit Chudasama started to open up the Leek defence with some intelligent runs.

Khalsa were back on terms when Scott Angliss’ powerful cross was deflected past the home keeper by Mickey Hayer.

Both sides had chances to take the lead, with Khalsa keeper Nick Mills making back-to-back saves and Amritpal Atwal putting the ball agonisingly wide of the post at the other end.

The second half started in a similar fashion to the first, with Leek pressing Khalsa high up the pitch.

However, the visitors struck the first blow, Jo Colantonio threading a ball through for Atwal who rounded several defenders and the keeper to give Khalsa the lead.

Ghattaura was denied in a one-on-one with the Leek keeper and as Khalsa committed men forward in search of a third goal, they were left exposed at the back. Their gung-ho approach led to the home side earning a short corner which they converted for a share of the points.

Chudasama had been given his opportunity with the first team after notching a hat-trick in Khalsa 2nds’ 7-0 thrashing of Loughborough Town in Midlands One on Saturday.

Andrew Pell (2) Raghbir Singh and Bhavan Singh Thiara completed the rout.

Parvinder Singh Sangha and Pritpal Singh both scored twice as Khalsa 3rds beat Stone 3rds 6-1.

Leamington’s ladies 1sts went down to a 3-0 defeat against an experienced Sutton Coldfield 2nds, while their 2nds were held to a 0-0 draw in a lacklustre affair against Solihull Blossomfield.

The 3rds, meanwhile, gained their third successive victory in Warwickshire Division Three, beating Nuneaton 2nds 3-1.

Debbie Burton fired in Leamington’s first from a short corner and Emily Steer dived full-length to convert a second penalty corner to double the advantage.

Nuneaton pulled a goal back just after half-time, but Steer made sure of the points for Leamington in the last few seconds of the game.

A hat-trick inside the first 15 minutes from Dan Jones helped Leamington’s men’s 2nds to a 6-0 win over Ludlow 2nds in West Midlands Division Two.

Rob Matthews, Saleem Zuberi and an own goal completed the scoring.

On Sunday, Leamington Ladies recorded a 4-2 win over Irish touring side NUIG courtesy of goals from Ellie Lewis, Mhairi Dunn, man-of-the-match Kerry Luckett and captain Becky Lascelles.

Warwick’s men were held for the second week running in Midlands Division One, with hosts Melton hanging on for a 1-1 draw.

Melton took the lead against the run of play with an unstoppable finish into the top corner.

Warwick fought back and Neil McLester had a goal ruled out as the visitors struggled to turn territory in to clear chances.

The second half was pretty much one-way traffic as Warwick dominated.

James Dexter-Barrett eventually equalised from a short corner but Warwick were unable to go on and grab a deserved winner.

A Jon Sawdon strike proved in vain as Warwick’s 3rds slipped to a 3-1 defeat at Bridgnorth.

The 4ths, however, opened their campaign with a 3-2 win over their Bridgnorth counterparts at Gallows Hill.

Rich Kelly slotted home in the first half from a short corner to make it 1-0 at the break, with Ian Stickels adding another shortly after half-time.

A Bridgnorth fightback was on the cards as they pulled a goal back to make it 2-1.

However, Russell East restored Warwick’s two-goal cushion and a late second for Bridgnorth was a mere consolation.

Hamish Hanson scored twice from close range and James Alison added one from a slick short corner routine as Warwick 5ths drew 3-3 with Rugby & East Warwicks 7ths.

In a competitive Feeder League West match, Warwick Ladies 1sts went down to a 4-2 defeat against Stone.

Nicki Breeds and Mel Preece scored the Warwick goals.

Emilia Dunkerley scored Warwick 3rds’ consolation goal in a 4-1 defeat at the hands of Olton & West Warwicks, while the ladies’ 4ths came from behind to secure a 2-2 draw with Berkswell, Jess Bramley and Martha Hayes on target.
