Lillington Free Church’s A team finish a fine third in National Cadet League

Four teams representing Lillington Free Church and one from Rugby competed in the National Cadet (under-15) League in Wellingborough.

In a strong Division One, Lillington’s A team of Adam Cofler, Andrew McIlvaney and Tom Harris did well to finish third.

After a disappointing opener against host club Westfield A which they lost 5-1, they bounced back to beat Bedford 4-2, Westfield B 5-1 and Lillington B 6-0.

They also suffered a narrow 4-2 defeat to the top side, Draycott A from Long Eaton, with Cofler inflicting the only defeat on Matthew Webster and McIlvaney having a great success over Kingsley Barber.

The B team of Adam Pulman, Josh Wyatt-Smith and Olivia Fletcher faced quite a challenge in the top flight but despite finishing bottom of six teams, recorded an excellent 4-2 win over Bedford.

The Third Division was split into two with teams playing three matches of nine sets.

Rugby’s Sam Cafaero, Millie Bradshaw and Freddy Jones dropped just one point on the way to easily taking 3A.

Lillington D claimed second spot with Katie Singleton, Jenny Singleton, Eve Briscoe and Alice Todd beating Cliffedale Chambers C of Grantham 6-3 and Westfield C 9-0 before succumbing 9-0 to Rugby.

Lillington C finished at the head of Division 3B with Tom Fletcher (unbeaten), Lewis Singleton and Robbie Fitchford beating Draycott C 8-1, Cliffedale D 9-0 and Dacorum Boys from Hemel Hempstead 7-2.

Lillington’s Timmy Cooper played in the British Junior League Division Three for Market Rasen Racers and won seven out of ten as his team finished third.

In Division One of the Leamington & District League, Colebridge A defeated County Council B 7-3 with Ian Ferguson winning his three singles and the doubles alongside Kate Hughes.

St George’s B swept aside County Council B 9-1 with Mark Jackson and Alan Hewitt both claiming trebles.

Rugby C trounced Eathorpe A 8-2 in the second tier with Danny Orr and Anshul Satsangi taking maximums and Niall Herbert winning twice.

Rugby C went even better in week two, roasting Whitnash 10-0 courtesy of the same trio.

John Taylor took all three as Colebridge B edged out Nomads A 6-4, while Nomads C whipped their B side 8-2 in Division Three with Robin Fox-Strangways and Richard Miles undefeated.

Nomads B also fell to WCC C by the same scoreline as Tony Ford and Cliff Jackson posted trebles and Doug Lowe won a brace.

Rugby D beat the fancied Millennium team 6-4. Phil Morris and Jo Outhwaite (both two and the doubles) and Barry Hammond (1) saw them home despite Rob Warnes’ treble.

Ashorne and Eathorpe B drew in Division Four with the home team’s Roger Kelley the only maximum man.

Eathorpe C crushed Free Church J 9-1 through Jon Ablett (3), Charles Wragg (2) and John Ablett (1).
