Mechanical issues scupper rally duo

The Rally of the Midlands once again attracted the cream of the UK’s best Tarmac rally drivers to Hinckley and Nuneaton last weekend, with two teams from the district also in attendance.

Mark II Motorsport were seeded eighth and were keen to see how their new Ford Escort Cosworth WRC would perform in its first serious test.

Mark Welch, who won the event in 2009, got off to a terrific start on the loop of Friday night stages around Arbury Hall, Mallory Park and the centre of Hinckley alongside debutant co-driver Keith Hounslow.

The duo were fifth overall at the close of Friday and rose a place the following day as confidence grew.

However, their rally came to an end at the conclusion of stage sevent due to a flat battery and a faulty alternator.

Hope & Anchor landlord Steve Massey was an even earlier casualty, retiring his BMW 318i after stage two.

However, thanks to the help of Andy Baker, owner of the Leamington-based AB Motorsport, Massey was back out on Saturday in the Trophy Rally.
