Medal bonanza for the Johnsons

Leamington C&AC’s Andrew and June Johnson had a successful European Veteran Non-Stadia Championships, coming home from Thionville, France, with six medals between them.

More than 1,000 athletes from 27 countries entered the Championships, electing to run one or all of the 10k, cross-country relay and half marathon across the three days of competition.

June gained her first individual medal in the women’s 10k, where she ran a consistent race in perfect conditions (1st 5k 24:00, 2nd 5k: 24:03) to finish second in the F65 category.

Andrew ran in the 10k race for men aged 55 and over alongside Leamington teammate Alex Montgomery, who was making his championship debut.

Andrew worked his way past several runners in his category to finish fourth M65 in 42:35, while Montgomery, who was suffering from a cold virus, struggled home in 42:24 to come 31st M55.

June picked up her second silver later in the day as a member of the second-placed Great Britain W65 team, while Andrew collected a gold medal as part of the winning GB M65 team.

The following day, both Johnsons ran a 2k leg in the cross-country relays, with Andrew picking up his second gold and June again having to be content with silver.

On the final day, all three lined up with 1,200 other runners for the open half marathon.

June Johnson recorded a season’s best time of 1:46:28 for her second individual silver, while Andrew dipped under his 1hr 35min target to finish sixth M65 in 1:34:26.

Montgomery, who had only decided at the last minute to compete in his first half marathon for 14 years, was delighted to finish in a creditable 1:34:21, which put him 24th M55 out of a field of 45.
