Kenilworth's Steve Miller will line up as an elite runner at the Obstacle Course Racing (OCR) UK and European Championships after a superb second in his age category at the Winter Ram Run at Stoneleigh Park.

Miller, 40, discovered OCR in 2014 having previously raced on the road and says he is now addicted to the sport, one of the fastest growing in the UK.

“For many years I had entered local running events, but I got bored and needed a new challenge,” said Miller, whose wife Rachel races for Kenilworth Runners.

“I loved running but needed something else to test me mentally and physically.

“The Ram Run offers OCR runs from 8k to 24k for enthusiasts like me, fun runners and even juniors - anyone above the age of six.

“It’s about challenging yourself and challenging nature to whatever level you want as you confront each different terrain or obstacle.

“As confidence grows, runners will astonish themselves at what they take on and conquer.

“It’s great for fitness, self-esteem, bonding, creating new friendships and, most of all, great fun. It’s also great for runners who are not so strong at running as it brings in elements they may be better at.”

Saturday’s run utilised the entire 800 acres of Stoneleigh Park with its forest areas, the River Avon and the incredible Stoneleigh Abbey marshlands.

There were more than 350 entrants across the 12k and 24k options, with Miller finishing second in the V40-49 category in the 12k. The Team Ram runner crossed the line in 1hr 22min 38sec for 15th overall.

The 12k race was won by Paul Richards in 1:12:35, with Louise Hobson (1:28:39) first female.

Tristan Steed(2:28:43) was the 24k winner.

Ram Runs take place every three months, with the next one on the weekend of April 2/3.
