Minihans are lords of rings

BROTHERS Pat and Kevin Minihan were winners of the Maggie Collins Trophy in a rings pairs tournament at the Hope Tavern in Leamington.

The tournament, organised by the pub and The Cork Association of Leamington, attracted 40 entries and a large crowd of supporters with £170 being raised for the Myton Hospice Appeal.

Miss Collins, the partner of pub co-owner Pat, died of cancer two years ago and medals with a picture of her along with the trophy were presented in her memory.

Rings is a traditional Irish pub sport which follows a similar set of rules to darts in that players start with a score they must reduce to win each game.

Players throw rubber rings at a board which has hooks of different score values ranging from 1 to 13.

To ‘check out’ players must hit three ones in a row.

At this event teams were picked from a hat on the day and they started each game with scores of 151.

Ted Forde, of the Cork Association, said the sport has become very popular at the pub and organisers are hoping it will appeal to second and third generation Irish people living in and around Leamington.
