Nicholson recovers to knock out Beaton

Steve Beaton paid tribute to a fine fightback by Paul Nicholson after bowing out of the Grand Slam of Darts at the second-round stage last Friday.

Beaton dominated the first half of the contest at the Wolverhampton Civic Hall, producing a brilliant 141 checkout on his way to opening up a 6-3 lead.

However, Nicholson stormed back to win six legs in a row and stand just one leg from the quarter-final.

Beaton won the next leg in 13 darts and hit a 180 on his way to claiming the 17th leg, but Nicholson took the next in 14 darts to set up a last-eight meeting with Phil Taylor.

“My congratulations to Paul, he fought back and played really well.” said Beaton, who reached the knockout stage after coming second in his group.

I was disappointed in losing the game but you have to take the positives from it.

“I am playing cracking darts and a couple of missed doubles cost me the game.”
