Charity recalls royal opening

The Regent Street shop was officially opened in 1989 by the national charity’s president, Her Royal Highness, The Princess Royal, who cut the ribbon in front of waiting crowds and press photographers.

During the tea volunteers swapped stories about the princess’s visit before cutting a special anniversary cake and recreating a photograph taken outside the shop at the official opening.

Sue Dennis, Save the Children regional manager, said: “Our veterans told us how wonderful Princess Anne was. She talked to all the volunteers and there were so many crowds that came out to see her that Regent Street had to be closed.

“There were also armed police on the roofs of neighbouring shops.”

Mandy Tierney on behalf of the national charity presented a certificate of achievement to the Leamington shop, which has raised more than £1.7 million in the 25 years that it has been open.

Shop leader Celia Hardiman said: “It’s so exciting to be celebrating our silver anniversary and we are very grateful for all of the support we have received over the years. We would be delighted to welcome new volunteers as we are completely volunteer-run.”
