Have you bought car from Soans?

Soans needs no introduction to Leamingtonians. The company has been a part of the Leamington landscape for as long as anyone living in the town can remember, writes Allan Jennings.

Whether it is during its time as a prominent landmark at Sydenham, during its time in Dormer Place or even as a car showroom on the Parade.

Many of the local population will have owned a Ford car from Soans and this family company has provided the town with apprenticeships and jobs for many a year.

But what is the wider history of Soans success story; when and where were they formed? Were they always a car company? When did they come to Leamington? What is the connection with an ice rink in Leamington? Where was the Parade showroom? What has Formula One champion Graham Hill to do with Soans? Why did the Torrey Canyon disaster affect Soans? Why did they have a brass band marching down the Parade? Are there any photographs of the early days?

Well, you can find out from the person who knows - managing director Richard Soans. He will be giving a presentation which includes many photographs to Sydenham History Group and visitors at the Sydni Centre, Cottage Square at 7.30pm on Tuesday October 21. All are welcome - £2 entry to include refreshments.
