Leamington grocer fought in the Great War

Ken and Pat Goode of Leamington are trying to find out more about Ken’s great grandfather who fought in the First World War:

Sidney George Glanville was born at Abingdon in Berkshire in 1876 but moved to Leamington.

Before the war he worked as a grocer in the produce section at Burgis & Colbourne in the Parade (now House of Fraser). He married Mary Clarke at Dale Street Methodist church in 1900. They lived in Portland Street and Victoria Street and had two daughters, Kitty and Maud.

All Ken and Pat know is that he enlisted in the Royal Field Artillery, becoming a gunner, and served in the Middle East. He died of pneumonia on December 12 1918 in Egypt, at the age of 42.

He is buried at Ramleh War Cemetery, near Tel Aviv in modern day Israel. He is commemorated on the war memorial in Euston Place, Leamington.

His widow Mary, who lived until 1964, was a founder member of the ladies section of Leamington Bowls Club.

Their daughter Kitty married Biddy Steane – they owned the Grove Dairy in Regent Grove, Leamington .

Their daughter Maud married Bernard Shipp a senior manager with Dewhursts the butchers.

Ken’s parents were George and Pamela Goode. George ran a shoe repair shop in George Street. He was tragically murdered at the shop by a burglar in the 1980s.
