Leamington pubs history book hit by delay

The pubs book, written by Allan Jennings, Martin Ellis, and Tom Lewin, is unlikely to be published before February.

A disappointed Allan Jennings said: “Both the publishers and ourselves wanted it to be out for Christmas. After all, the manuscript was delivered to the publishers on August 5. It would have made a terrific Christmas present.

“We have received very disappointing news that the publisher has been in hospital for a hip operation and there have been complications. This means that there is no chance of the book coming out before February. We would like to take this opportunity to apologise and thank you for your patience. We are as disappointed as you and we hope that it will not be too long before we get some positive news.

“In the meantime, here is a snippet that will not be in the book.

“You may remember Syd’s Bar at the Regent, but you will not remember the Castle Hotel (Castle Inn) in Brunswick Street at the bottom of Charlotte Street.

“On May 12, 1832, the Courier carried the following advert: Castle Hotel to be let on lease, with immediate possession, the present proprietor retiring from business. The house has been established about 12 years+ and contains 3 parlours, 2 drawing rooms, 13 bedrooms, bar, tap room, kitchen, brewhouse, and good cellaring; stable-yard with four lock-up coach houses, and stabling for 11 horses, with servants’ bedrooms over.”
