No Free Wellingtons!

DOES anybody remember this old part of Leamington, not far from the town centre?

Peter Pettipher has sent in this picture of the old Bradshaw’s Nurseries which used to be just off Tachbrook Road, around the area of the “new” homes built in St Helen’s Road.

He says the picture must have been taken in the 1940s or 1950s and features his late wife, then Edna Atkins, with Mr Bradshaw and a man he believes they used to call Harry.

Mr Pettipher, who is now aged 86 and living in Turpin Court, not far from the area, said: “Edna was never officially a Land Girl when the Second World War broke out because she already worked in agriculture so she missed out on the free Wellington boots and the uniform.

“She went to work in Suffolk at the start of the war but there were so many air crashes that she said it was like being on the frontline. It was not better than being here so she came back to work at Bradshaw’s where they used to grow chysanthemums and tomatoes for Coventry Market.

“Bradshaw’s went went the new houses were built but I wondered whether anybody could still remember the place.”
