When children enjoyed free treats in the park

These photographs from the collection of the late Jean Field show local children in the early 20th century.

They have been supplied by her brother, Ian Box, who lives on the Isle of Wight.

The first picture is of St Paul’s School choir who won a music festival prize in 1925. Ian and Jean’s father Bill Box attended the school from 1910 to 1917. He went on to work at Flavel’s.

The second photo features Milverton schoolchildren lining up in their playground ready to go down Dale Street to Princes Drive to see the Prince of Wales open the new bridge in 1923. This photo was given to Jean Field by Miss Katherine Hanks, a former senior lecturer at Coventry College of Education, who lived in Leamington. She died about two years ago.

The third photo was taken at Mr Bartlett’s treat for children in Victoria Park, Leamington. Mr Bartlett kept the Eureka cake shop in Spencer Street and also sent children on the Sunshine holidays at Harbury.

Jean Field, who died in May this year aged 74, compiled books about Whitnash and other places.
