Owen-Evans hoping to take on the World

Leek Wootton cyclist Ruth Owen-Evans is targeting World Cup qualification after achieving her first British podium finish.

Owen-Evans recently moved within touching distance of the top ten British female mountain bike riders after achieving her first podium finish in the British Cross Country Mountain Bike Racing Series.

The finish came during the final round of the series in Langdon Hills, Essex, and represents a meteoric rise for the 29-year-old who only made the move to elite competition this year.

The result capped off a solid first season for Owen-Evans who is making a big impression with the Moda-Bikemagic Race Team.

Owen-Evans, who balances training and competitions with her role as partnership development officer at county sports partnership CSW Sport, said: “A rider’s first year in elite competition is always a tough one and adapting to the step up in competition is a steep learning curve.

“However, my results have improved throughout the season and I’m now progressing through the world rankings as I target World Cup qualification in 2013.

“The success of our team GB cyclists at this year’s Olympic and Paralympic Games shows just what can be achieved when the resources are available.
