Perry falls one shot short of major shock

Kenilworth’s Sarah-Jane Perry almost caused a major upset at the Mexican Squash Open in Mexico City.

A comfortable 11-8, 11-5, 11-8 first-round win over Mexican Karla Urrutia rewarded Perry with a quarter-final against top seed and world-ranked number 16 Samantha Teran.

Teran edged the first game, but Perry, playing her first game at altitude, then took control taking the next two games to five and four and was just a point away from victory at 10-6 in the fourth.

However, the home favourite staged a remarkable recovery, winning the next six points to claim the game before going on to clinch the decider 11-7.

After the match, which lasted a gruelling 74 minutes, Perry tweeted: “Note to self - don’t switch off at 2-1 and 10-6 up. Got to be pleased overall though.”

Teran went on to lift the title with victories over England’s Lauren Selby (9-11, 11-4, 11-5, 11-5) and Lauren Briggs (11-9, 11-2, 11-2).
