Perry is top of the Pyramid

Kenilworth’s Sarah-Jane Perry has won the Pyramid International Tournament in Tuckahoe, New York.

Perry was not even sure that she was going to play in the tournament due to an injury.

However, she was persuaded to compete after a creditable performance in defeat to world number seven Madeline Perry while playing for Birmingham University in the Professional Squash League .

And the seventh-seeded Perry underlined her return to fitness a week later with a comfortable 11-6, 11-6, 11-5 victory over Katja Amir (Germany) in her opening knockout match.

She then scored a hat-trick of 3-1 victories over the top three seeds, beating England’s Lauren Briggs 11-5, 8-11, 11-3, 11-9, top seed Line Hansen (Denmark) 11-8, 11-4, 4-11, 11-7 and finally Egypt’s Kanzy El Dafrawy (7-11, 11-8, 11-9, 11-4) to take the title.

“Pleased to win 3-1 today and win my third WSA title and biggest to date,” tweeted the 22 year-old.

The world number 45 is due to play in the tournament later this week in Mexico, but her participation is uncertain because the approaching hurricane has led to flights being cancelled.
