Perry picks up county award

Sports stars from Leamington, Warwick and Kenilworth were among the winners at the eighth annual Coventry, Solihull and Warwickshire Sports Awards ceremony.

Among those recognised were Warwick Paralympian Tommy Godwin, who picked up the Lifetime Achievement Award, and Sportswoman of the Year, Kenilworth squash star Sarah-Jane Perry.

She said: “It’s a great feeling to win this award, especially as the two other girls nominated - Kelly Sibley and Naomi Folkard are both Olympians.

“Obviously squash players don’t currently get the chance to compete at the Olympics - so it’s great to see my sport recognised.

“I’m hoping that will change soon, we’ve had two very close bids before and we have a good team behind our bid now.

“It’s been my first full year on the tour and I have been able to travel to so many great places.

“I managed to break into the top 50 squash players in the world this year, and the next aim is to get into the top 25.

“I’ve already beaten a couple of the top 25 so I’m confident I can do that.”

Other winners included Community Sports Award winner – Leamington basketball and boccia coach Benji Evans – and Lillington Table Tennis Club founder Philip John from Leamington, who picked up the Unsung Hero gong.
