Roberts rewarded for fine year

Leamington archer Isobel Roberts was rewarded for an exceptional year with third place in the Archery UK junior archer of the year awards.

Roberts, who had won her previous four national competitions, was unable to maintain the run, however, at the National Junior Indoor Championships at the International Centre, Telford.

Shooting a Portsmouth round, which consists of 60 arrows at a 60cm target at 20 yards, Roberts finished third in the girls’ under-12 category, seven points adrift of the winner.

She did have the consolation of picking up trophies from the national postal league, which was shot earlier in the year, after winning both the normal/recurve bow and barebow categories.

Fellow Leamington archer Michael McCarthy narrowly missed out on third in the under-12 boys category in Telford.

Reigning outdoor champion McCarthy tied with the third-placed archer on 469 points but was pushed down to fourth by virtue of fewer targets hit.

He was also awarded a silver plate for finishing second in the postal league.

Their elder siblings, Beth Roberts and Caitlin McCarthy, both shot in the under-16 category, with Beth finishing ninth and Caitlin 15th.
