Roddy is a leading light for Warwickshire under-20s

Chris McCarthy and Paddy Roddy of Kenilworth Runners represented Cheshire and Warwickshire, respectively, in the UK Inter Counties Cross Country Championships at Cofton Park, Birmingham.

Roddy, taking part in the men’s under-20 race held over 8k, had a fantastic run to finish 75th overall in 27:21 and lead Warwickshire to 18th out of the 27 competing counties.

By the time McCarthy took part in the day’s finale - the 12k senior men’s race - the nine previous races had taken their toll on the course, which had degenerated into a mudbath.

The conditions combined with a lack of full training in the run-up to the event meant McCarthy finished down in 213th and was the fourth of six counters for Cheshire.

Kenilworth Runners’ Matthew Kingston-Lee headed to Grantham to take part in the eighth Newton’s Fraction Half Marathon, named after the town’s most famous son Sir Isaac Newton who was born in neighbouring Woolsthorpe-by-Colsterworth.

After a slightly over-enthusiastic start, Kingston-Lee was forced to settle for sixth position, coming home in 1:22:10.

The race winner was Royal Air Force runner Sam Mitchell, who led from the start and won by over four minutes in 1:11:13.
