Royals’ Welsh tie-up

Leamington Royals and Aberystwyth University have joined forces in a partnership which will see the Midlands Regional Championship winners’ website address feature on the Aberystwyth jersey.

With hundreds of students playing in the Wales and West BUCS League, Royals are hoping the new initiative will raise the profile of the club.

Royals will also help Abersytwyth develop an Alumni support system as an extra source of funding.

Leamington Royals and Aberystwyth co-founder Ash Howlett said: “Though this may look like an unlikely partnership, Aberyswyth University has supplied six players to the Royals, two of which started in our Midlands Regional Grand Final victory.

“A lot of young people from the Midlands go to Welsh universities and we want prospective players to know that both sides exist.

“Aberystwyth is an isolated rugby league outpost but it is also an indicator that the sport can exist and thrive anywhere and we have to do our best to support that.”

The Royals’ winning ways seem to have rubbed off, with Aberystwyth beating Bristol 32-18 in their first game.
