Newbold delivered their most controlled and powerful performance of the season with a superb display full of pace, precision and invention.

The front eight were once more immense, but this was backed up by a back line that just about outshone their forwards, writes Alan Bale.

With the addition of Adam Shaw and Dan O’Brien, Newbold looked sharper and more creative, complimenting the work of their pack to assist the scoring of nine cracking tries.

Newark missed a straightforward penalty in the first minute, and were made to pay instantly, as the ball was then whipped to Adam Shaw out wide, whose electric pace took him past a string of defenders to score. Ethan Wookey converted for 7-0.

Tom Grimmett led the charge from the line out as he bulldozed his way down the touchline. Ethan Wookey kicked into the corner where Ben Thompson’s off the top feed allowed Declan George to fire the ball out to Phil Reed, who stepped his way through a flimsy defence. Wookey converted for 14-0.

Ben Dawes then bulldozed his way through, supported by Tom Grimmett whose offload found KJ Henry, who still had a bit of work to do before touching down for the third converted try, Wookey three out of three and 21-0.

Newark’s spirited reply was to be expected, but as it looked promising for them, a stray pass found Adam Shaw, who was away again and touched down for Newbold’s bonus point, as Wookey missed his only kick of the day.

Newbold’s next play saw a scrum five metres out and a huge drive. Sam Thompson picked up at 8 and was stopped short, before Ben Dawes stormed over from a metre out. Wookey converted for a 33-0 scoreline.

It was all Newbold as Mark Hyde was involved, Ben Hartwell and Stuey Houghton in support, setting up the ball for Rory Blood to take play back into the Newark 22.

Newark tried desperately to find a way over before half time, but were shut out repeatedly by a strong home defence, who were giving nothing away.

It was the same as the second half kicked off. Newark were very much on the attack for the first ten minutes or so, but could simply not find a way through the Bold’s robust and well organised defence.

Adam Shaw was seeing a huge amount of ball as he kicked through, beyond the defence, but this time the bounce just got away from him.

Dan O’Brien’s massive clearance kick allowed Danny Treharne and Tom Grimmett to get on the ball and take play back into the opposition 22. Ben Thompson caught the ball from the line and strode through a gaping hole to touch down, with Wookey once more adding the extras for 40-0.

The best try of the game came from a break down the left. Five phases of play, Wookey finding O’Brien, who fed Phil Reed, who was able to sidestep inside the cover to put Shaun Pollard over for the next score, Wookey adding the extras for 47-0.

Ben Nuttall didn’t take long to make his presence felt, as he stole the ball at the line out and barged through for a simple converted score and 54-0.

It was the turn of Shaun Pollard to receive some ball wide out as he sprinted through, only to be tackled just short.

Newbold skipper Danny Facer had the last word as he stormed over the line to complete the try scoring. Wookey converting again for a final score of 61-0.

This weekend Newbold are at home and will be looking forward to welcoming Wellingborough, one of the few teams to have beaten them this season, to Parkfield Road for a 2.15pm kick off.
