Mavericks are raining champions

Leamington Mavericks overcame strong winds, constant rain and a tricky group to retain their sevens title at Alcester RFC.

Two tries each from Tom Secher and Liam Munroe and another by Patrick Northover gave Mavericks a 27-5 success over Alcester before a Jack Secher hat-trick inspired the Leamington side to a 24-5 victory over Woodrush.

Mavericks went on to top the group thanks to a comfortable 32-0 win over Bromsgrove, Northover, Tom Daplyn, Tom Secher, Danny Phillips and Craig Smith dotting down.

A physical contest against Hartbury College was settled by Smith’s second-half try after earlier scores for Liam Munroe and Tom Secher to set up a final clash against Old Laurentians.

Tom Secher raced away to open the scoring against OLs and the lead was extended to 12 points at the break courtesy of a converted score for the lively Danny Ruyssevelt.

Mavericks had to be patient after the interval as Laurentians threw everything at them.

However, they had the final say when quick turn-over ball set up Tom Secher for a try under the posts and a 19-0 success.
