Newbold and Lions still top and OLs third

It was another successful weekend in the league for all the town’s rugby clubs.

Newbold, top of Midlands 1 East, won 21-17 at bottom club Dronfield, although supporters may have been hoping for a more convincing margin of victory. Newbold now have a five-point lead over second-placed Old Northamptonians, with 51 points from 11 games.

This weekend they are the only Rugby team with a league game, hosting fourth-placed Huntingdon & District at Parkfield Road. Then on December 10 they travel to struggling Ilkeston, who are 13th, just above Dronfield.

Old Laurentians are still third in Midlands 2 East (South) after their 29-25 away win at Oadby Wyggestonians, who drop to fifth in the table. OLs (on 32 points) are just four points behind leaders Peterborough (36) with Oundle second on 34.

Their next league opponents on December 10 are fourth-placed Oakham, who have 31 points.

Oadby Wyggestonians will also be Rugby Lions’ hosts this weekend, in the RFU Midlands Intermediate Cup. On Saturday Lions won 26-10 at 11th-placed Barkers Butts to keep their six-point lead at the top of Midlands 2 West (South). Lions will be back at Webb Ellis Road on December 10 when Berkswell & Balsall, currently fourth in the league, will be the visitors.

Rugby St Andrews beat Bedworth 24-13 away to lift them up to seventh in Midlands 3 West (South). Bottom side Bedworth are still looking for their first league win of the season.

Saints are back in league action on December 10, when unbeaten leaders Droitwich will be the visitors at John Tomalin Way. They are currently 11 points clear at the top of the table, on 43 points after nine games, with Ledbury and Shipston on Stour chasing on 32.

Rugby Welsh were awarded the win against Trinity Guild in their Midlands 5 West (South) fixture. Welsh are fourth in the table and Guild sixth.

On December 10 Welsh travel to league leaders Burbage, who have won all their eight games so far.
