Sad end for departing Zimmerman

Erik Zimmerman’s final game for Aylesford Hawks ended in a Handicap Plate final defeat at the hands of Solihull side Arden.

After six years with Aylesford, Erik and his wife are moving back to their native Sweden in the summer and he was denied a winning send-off as Hawks were unable to claw back a generous 45-point deficit.

The Hawks captain contributed eight points in his last outing, with further points coming from Simon Payne (29), Gary Pennington (23), Ricky Fennell (20), Joel De Lara Bond (10).

But despite outscoring their opponents on the night 99-80, the handicap resulted in a 140-114 defeat.

After the game, club chairman John Mumford presented Zimmerman with a photograph of Hawks’ 2008 championship-winning team and paid tribute to the centre’s positive contribution since joining in 2005.

“He will be missed by not only the Hawks but by all the league teams that have played against him,” said Mumford.

“He played the game always in the right spirit and for me it has been a pleasure and honour to have such an outstanding captain. We all wish Erik and his wife all the best for the future back in Sweden.”
