Saikhon secures the Courier Cup for Frames with Dowds win

Frames kicked off the Leamington & District League’s finals week with a thrilling Courier Cup final victory over Lillington.

Frames, who won the trophy in 2010, went 1-0 up courtesy of Myles Matthews’ win over Robin Harris and doubled their advantage when Surinder Kandola beat Keith Brison.

Craig McCamley won his frame against Will Weeds to reduce the deficit, but Alexsey Osokin defeated Dave McLoughlin to put Frames one frame from victory.

However, wins by Simon Wade over Frames captain Gary Court and Dave Nash over Bob Kalsi set up a deciding-frame clash between Suk Saikhon and Damien Dowds.

And it was Saikhon who held his nerve in a tight encounter to see Frames to their second Courier Cup win in three years.

Nelson’s Neil Stribbling claimed the Cliff Webb Memorial Trophy final after a scrappy 5-3 win over Terry Robinson (Harbury).

The final of the six-red competition was a nervy encounter with Stribbling finally finding his form in the final two frames, helped by breaks of 30 and 34.

Windsor completed the league and cup double with a 4-2 win over Warwick Cons in the final of the Stan Ward Handicap Cup.

Wins from Ian Carter and Andy Gardner put Cons 2-0 up before Windsor fought back to lead 3-2 courtesy of wins from Vic Makh, Dean White and Pash Jugpal.

Cons looked like taking the match into a decider when Gordon Milling led Billy Morton 59-34.

However, a Milling foul left a free ball and Morton made him pay with a break of 28 before returning later to pot the all-important pink.

Nelson’s Nigel Croft wrapped up his third successive Kenilworth Billiards Trophy with victory over Chris Hudson. Lillington Bowls’ Hudson has now lost four of the last five finals.

Geoff Barrett, meanwhile, met old rival Richie Evans for the sixth time in the final of the Birmingham Mail Cup.

And, for the third successive year it was Barrett who prevailed, adding his seventh title in nine years to his recent Midlands Amateur success.

John Grubb, playing in his second successive Camkin Cup final, made up for last year’s disappointment by beating 2010 champion Martin Hunt.

Grubb last won the title in 2007.

The fairy-tale run of Home Guard duo Gavin Burt and Martin Cooper was finally ended in the final of the Pairs Cup as they went down 3-1 to hot favourites Billy Morton and Pash Jugpal.

Nelson made it a hat-trick of Three-Man Challenge Cup wins with a convincing 4-1 success over Warwick Cons.

Phil Parkin produced breaks of 20 and 25 on his way to victory over Ben Deller to put Nelson ahead, but a superb run of 68 from Ian Carter against Tony Baylis brought Cons level.

Nigel Croft restored Nelson’s advantage with a scrappy frame win over Duncan McKowen.

McKowen recorded a break of 23, but some fine tactical play from Croft allowed him to amass 27 points in fouls and claim victory.

McKowen was quickly back in action as he took on Baylis, who scored steadily to put Nelson one game from victory.

Parkin then clinched the trophy for Nelson with some fine attacking play yielding runs of 35, 22 and 18 in his win over Carter.

Part two of the finals week will be in next week’s Courier and Weekly News.
