SAILING: Have a go on Saturday

Why not sail into spring free of charge, when Rugby and Daventry Sailing Club, on Drayton Reservoir in Daventry (by Middlemore), hosts its early season Try Sailing Day on Saturday (April 16) from 2pm-4pm.

Anyone, of all ages, abilities and experience, is welcome to go along and get out on the water (weather permitting) with an experienced club member while getting a taste for all the activities you and your family can get involved in at the club this year and everything social club life offers. If you are an eager eight-year old, an agile 80 or anywhere in-between this could be start of a new adventure.

Sailing is a real family-friendly sport, with different boats mums, dads and the kids will all enjoy. Once you get into the sport, you can sail on your own, in pairs or all together as a family, depending on what boats you most enjoy sailing. You can start to race too and racing is a popular part of club life.

The Try Sailing Day welcomes people who may never have even considered stepping into a boat before, people who already know they would like to learn to sail but want to sample the sport first or sailors who may be new to the area and are looking for a club or perhaps haven’t sailed for some time.

All you will need to enjoy the Try Sailing Day is some comfortable clothes and old trainers you don’t mind getting wet and, weather depending, a waterproof and/or sunscreen.

Buoyancy aids, equipment and safety brief will be provided by the club and refreshments will be available.

Rugby and Daventry SC is a recognised RYA Training Centre meaning it conforms to the highest standards of quality and safety. The club is running its RYA learn to sail courses in May and August. If you can’t make this Try Sailing Day, the club is also running pre-booked ‘taster’ sessions on Sunday, May 22, as part of the nationwide RYA Push The Boat Out ‘have a go at sailing’ festival, and another free Try Sailing Day on Saturday, July 23.
