Second tour title for Perry

Kenilworth’s Sarah-Jane Perry claimed her second professional tour title with victory in the Ile-Rouse Corsican Open.

Seeded two, Perry reached the final after easing past Argentina’s Belen Etchechoury (11-6, 11-4, 11-4), Denmark’s Sally Skaarenborg (11-5, 11-6, 11-3) and Frenchwoman Maud Duplomb (11-3, 11-3, 11-6).

Final opponent Laura Pomportes also enjoyed the support of the home crowd and gave Perry her toughest match of the week, but the sixth seed, playing in her first WSA final, ultimately fell 13-11, 11-7, 6-11, 11-4 in 45 minutes.

Despite leading for most of the first game, the French favourite lost out on extra points and then fell two games behind before capitalising on lapses in concentration from Perry to pull a game back.

A slip early in the fourth hampered Pomportes’ movement and, despite hitting some crisp winners, it was Perry who stepped up to the mark to quickly finish off the game and the match.

Perry was as much relieved as pleased, saying: “I was a bit slow at the start and had nothing in my shots.

“All credit to Laura in the first. It took me a while to realise I was going to have to work hard.”

The victory will further improve Perry’s world ranking, which has already risen 200 places to 43 in the past 18 months.
