Also featuring Stratford AC and, for the first time, Knowle & Dorridge, the race utilised a section of the Greenway and part of the Kenilworth-Warwick University cycle path to create an undulating, two-lap, 10k course.

The biggest challenge on the night was the weather as temperatures exceeded 31°C during the day, with conditions barely cooling come the 7.30pm start time.

Kenilworth had three other finishers in the top-ten - Stuart Hopkins (36:40), Stephen Page (37:11) and Matthew Kingston-Lee (37:53), with the club taking every spot from Dave Ramus in 15th through to Graham Birch in 28th.

Imogen Peace was the third Kenilworth lady to finish, clocking 42:56, but ultimately it was Striders who retained the ladies’ title thanks to their superior strength in depth.

Jennie Spillane, who was 47th overall in 42:44, Melissa Venables (43:28), Caroline Millar (43:51), Dawn Clark (43.56) and Jo Kirby (44.15) all ranked inside the ladies’ top ten to give them a comfortable buffer over second-placed Kenilworth.

Spa Striders’ men’s team finished second, with Richard Shepherd, preparing for the UK triathlon championships, their first runner home and fifth overall in 36:51.

He was followed by strong performances from Will Johnson (11th in 38.07) and Paul Edwards (30th in 40.59).
