Slimm pickings for district’s bowlers at Women’s National Championships

There was to be no hometown success at the Bowls England Women’s National Championships, with the district’s last two hopes suffering early exits on the final weekend of competition at Victori a Park.

Avenue’s Helen Slimm did manage an opening-round win in the singles, beating Essex B’s Elaine Score 21-16.

However, she bowed out in the second round after a 21-9 defeat to Berkshire B’s Jane Porter.

Lillington’s Georgina Cooper, who was playing alongside Bournville’s Jamie-Lea Winch, saw her chances of glory evaporate in the preliminary round, with the Warwickshire duo beaten 20-17 by Sussex.

Warwick Boat Club’s ladies recorded a resounding 52-shot win at home to Avon in their three-rink triples encounter.

It proved a game to remember for Pam Legge, who has only recently started playing in competitive matches.

Legge was lead as Barbara Froggatt skipped Boat Club’s first rink to an overwhelming 32-4 success.

Mary Wheildon (17-15) and Lyn Taylor (30-8) claimed Boat Club’s other rink wins.

Royal Leamington Spa’s ladies claimed a hard-fought 49-46 victory at Rugby in a three-rink triples friendly.

Leamington faced a two-shot deficit going into the final three ends.

However, Elizabeth G Jones fought back from 18-15 down to win 21-20, while Wyn Jackson picked up a shot despite her 15-12 defeat and Donna Kerr maintained her five-point cushion to give the visitors a 49-46 victory.

Whitnash overturned a 12-shot deficit after five ends to beat Leamington 122-118.

A Siston recorded the highest winning rink for Whitnash, with Graham Cluff (18-17) and Adrian Shuttleworth (22-17) also successful.

Bob Cook and Dave Gardner drew 15-15, while Bill Griffin (30-20) and Dick Williams (25-21) replied for Spa.

Lillington won three of the six rinks at home to Avenue, but still lost their friendly 141-116, John Hughes (27-17), P Hooper (27-19) and Tony Farmer (31-16) with Avenue’s wins.
