Sochi selection means hard work starts now for Turney

Warwick seated skier Anna Turney insists now is not the time to pop open the champagne after being selected for the Sochi 2014 Winter Paralympics.

Despite having reached the qualification target set by the British Disabled Ski Team at the end of 2103, it was not until last week that Turney was officially announced as part of a 15-strong British squad.

It is no surprise that Turney was given the nod, with the 34-year-old having recorded top-three finishes in Canada, USA and Austria this season to add to her Paralympic experience.

Four years ago at the Vancouver 2010 Winter Paralympics Turney finished sixth in the slalom event.

And, while she insists she is far more prepared this time around, Turney is not about to take anything for granted.

“You can’t say I’m going to go out and win a medal because anything can happen in ski racing,” said Turney.

“That is why I am not taking anything lightly and we’ll be racing in France, then we have a week at home which I’m really looking forward to with my husband.

“And then after that we race in Abtenau in Austria and then we have a holding camp, so we will be just training on snow and preparing and then we head out to Sochi for the Games on February 28.”

Turney certainly seems to be timing her assault on Sochi to perfection, having won giant slalom bronze at a World Cup event at Copper Mountain.

Three days later she was officially announced on the British team for Sochi and Turney is in no mood to slow down any time soon.

“My results have been better than ever this year, I’ve now qualified in all disciplines in World Cups,” she added. “At the moment my best points are in slalom but probably my best chances are in the speed events.

“It’s looking good. I’ve just won a World Cup bronze medal so I’m really pleased with that. That was an amazing achievement, it’s coming together at the right time.”
