Spa made to suffer by Sutton

SUTTON COLDFIELD 76 LEAMINGTON 8

Leamington were well beaten by a side who expect to be plying their trade in National Three Midlands next season.

With both the sun in their eyes and the wind against them, Spa did well to hold out for 15 minutes.

But as soon as Sutton made the first incursion, it was clear the enormity of the task that lay ahead.

Spa did, however, start in a positive manner and were keen to exploit any breaks that came their way.

Centre Gordon Jackson, engineered a couple of powerful runs up the middle of the park and Simon Dudley tried to set Spa on the attack with some thoughtful play from his own 22.

Sutton, however, demonstrated their class when they broke from the halfway line to score the opening try.

A couple of out-of-character lapses in the Spa defence then allowed two further scores and once again the visitors were playing catch-up.

Spa then had further concern as influential scrum-half Patrick Northover had to leave the field with an arm injury.

After the break, Simon Tyler took advantage of a Sutton infringement to get Spa on the scoresheet with a well-struck penalty.

However, the home side were soon back in the groove with another converted try.

A further converted score followed before Spa once again got on the scoresheet.

From the kick-off, Matt Cooper put pressure on the home defence and as they failed to tidy up loose ball, the back-row forward scrambled over.

As the game entered the last quarter, Spa picked up two yellow cards and the home side took full advantage, scoring a further five tries.
