Thompson leads from the front as Kenilworth make it three in a row

After their match against Hereford was rained off the previous weekend, Kenilworth were keen to get back into action and were rewarded with a penalty after two minutes which Josh Hickman dragged just wide of the posts.

They soon had another opportunity after some fine mauling pushed the visitors back, Hickman slotting over the penalty in the ninth minute.

Worcester scored the first try of the match, however, crossing in the 18th minute.

Kenilworth responded superbly, with a fantastic try from Hickman. The move started just outside the Worcester 22 with Hickman ignoring the overlap and producing a sidestep and a dummy to scythe through the Worcester defence and go over.

The windy conditions proved difficult for the kickers all afternoon and the conversion narrowly drifted wide of the posts.

Kenilworth continued to apply pressure and, although Alex Selby missed touch with his long-range clearance, the visitors knocked on to give Kenilworth an attacking scrum inside the Worcester 22.

Scrum-half Gareth Renowden almost added a second try under the posts but lost the ball as he went over the line.

It was not long before a second try was scored, however, as Bobby Thompson made the most of a five-metre scrum to touch down under the posts.

Hickman added the conversion before a second penalty just before the break made it 18-7 to the hosts at the interval.

With the wind now in their favour, Worcester made a strong start to the second half and scored a converted penalty try inside the first ten minutes to close the gap to just four points.

The sides exchanged penalties before the pivotal moment of the match came, with just under 20 minutes remaining.

Replacement Joe Jepps’ dazzling run from half way took Kenilworth up to the Worcester try line before Thompson crossed to extend the hosts’ advantage to nine points.

With the bonus point now in sight, Kenilworth targeted the all-important fourth try.

Renowden produced a clever chip over the Worcester defence for Charlie Preston to chase, but he was barged into touch five metres from the line.

Kenilworth were awarded a penalty and eventually a scrum to give them a great attacking platform and lock Dan Careless crossed to secure the bonus point.

Hickman’s excellent conversion gave the home side a comfortable 33-17 lead before Worcester scored a consolation in the 73rd minute.

n Kenilworth Colts claimed a 19-7 victory at Berkswell & Balsall.

Playing down the slope, Kenilworth opened the scoring in the 11th minute through Callum  Martin.

Ben Chant added a second try just short of half-time, converted by Harvey Joy, with Ben Green’s converted try shortly after the interval extending the lead to 19 points.

Bs subjected Kenilworth to a sustained period of pressure but just had a converted try to show for their efforts.
