Thrills, spills and hellish brakes for Kenilworth’s Boxing Day event

Team Jewson-MI Racing enjoyed a successful day at the Boxing Day cyclo-cross event on Kenilworth Common, which is now in its 62nd year.

Veteran rider Carl Sturgeon finished in third place and second veteran behind Raleigh GAC professional Steven Roach who also won the event in 2014.

Sturgeon’s team-mate Steve Knight finished sixth overall and third veteran, while Mark James was fourth veteran.

Kirby Bennett narrowly avoided serious damage to his eye after a fall on the opening lap and despite blood pouring from a wound and blurred vision, recovered to finish fifth veteran.

Pete Busby was not so lucky, however, after slicing the end of his little finger off while making adjustments to his front wheel while riding.

Busby caught his finger in the disc brake and had to be taken to hospital.

Ride Coventry’s Darren Atkins finished second overall, while Isla Rowntree (Islabikes) was first female and 24th overall.

Cotswold Veldrijden’s Dave McMullen was the first veteran 60-plus.

World masters’ champion Phil Roach (Rugby) retired after puncturing midway through the race.
