TRIATHLON: Awards honour chairman's amazing year

Rugby Triathlon Club chairman Mike Smallwood, has been recognised for his outstanding achievements in the sport.

In the past month Mike, 70, who lives in Daventry, is delighted to have scooped three awards.

These include:

# The 2016 Daventry District Local Sportsman of the Year award.

# The 2016 Northamptonshire Sports Awards Local Male Sportsman of the Year award.

# The 2016 British Triathlon Federation Male Age Group Triathlete of the Year award, presented in Leeds.

These awards are in recognition of Mike’s success in triathlon over the last year, having won every one of the following races in the 70-74 age group category:

# April 2016: European Sprint Duathlon Championship in Kalkar, Germany

# May 2016: English National Standard Distance Triathlon Championship held at Graffam Water, Cambridgeshire

# May 2016: British Sprint Triathlon Championship, held in Milton Keynes.

# May 2016: European Sprint Triathlon Championship held in Lisbon, Portugal

# June 2016: European Aquathlon Championship in Chateauroux, France (Triple European Champion).

# August 2016: British Standard Distance Triathlon Championship held in Liverpool (Double British Champion).

# September 2016: World Championships in Cozumel, Mexico and over five days won the World Aquathlon Championship (2.5km run / 1km swim / 2.5km run) andwon the World Sprint Triathlon Championship (750m swim / 20km bike / 5km run. (Double World Champion)

He also came second in the World Standard Distance Triathlon Championship (1.5km swim / 40km bike / 10km run).

Mike said:“This competition year has been extremely successful for me, it is one thing to set targets but it’s quite another to actually success and hit them all throughout the year.

“All three awards were special but the BTF Award was determined by members’ and fellow triathletes’ votes, so to get the approval of your peers definitely adds to the prestige.

“Every sports person dreams of representing their country and I have been fortunate to be able to represent Great Britain on a regular basis since 2007.

“I have shown that dreams can come true – even if you have to wait a while”
