Upton down and out as rampant Kenilworth run in nine tries

The gulf between top and bottom was perfectly illustrated on an overcast day in Worcestershire as leaders Kenilworth ran in nine tries.

Kenilworth gave an indication of their supremacy when Jack Gibson made the first break of the game, feeding Jimmy Middleton who chased his own kick ahead to within ten metres of the Upton line.

From the ensuing lineout, the ball was moved swiftly across the back line to Simon Tyler who cut inside but was held up by spirited defence.

The ball was quickly recycled to scrum-half Gareth Renowden, who darted between the defence to score the opening try, converted by Tom Kendall.

Straight from the restart, a crunching tackle by Nyle Beckett coughed up possession and Renowden fed Johnny Cresswell for a drive to the line, with the supporting Renowden taking the scoring pass.

The game was being played at a lively pace despite the extremely heavy pitch and Renowden crossed the line to complete his hat-trick, with Kendall missing his first conversion of the afternoon.

With Kenilworth now in sight of the all-important bonus point, sustained pressure and good movement of the ball allowed Dom Sheehan to cross the line for a try on the stroke of half-time.

Kendall converted to give Kenilworth a 26-0 interval lead.

Kenilworth started the second half in the same vein as they ended the first, with Jack Gibson making a lightning break.

His route towards the Upton line took him towards the right wing where he fed the supporting Beckett, who stepped inside and beat two defenders on his way to a great score under the posts. Kendall added the easy conversion.

Kenilworth continued to press and, after a ten-minute spell of Upton resistance, added their sixth try with Steve Todd crashing over.

Upton never gave up the fight and were rewarded with an unconverted try.

With Kenilworth dominant, a great move involving both the forwards and backs looked set to reward Ross Lowthian with the try of the season. However, he lost the ball in the act of touching down.

However, Ks were to score further tries through the ever-reliable Bobby Thompson from a pushover scrum and stalwart Nick Collett, driving over from a planned lineout move.

Beckett also crossed for his second try, just managing to touch down a cross-kick before the ball ran dead.

Although the referee was some distance from the touchdown he awarded the try on the nod of the chasing Upton defender - a nice touch from a well-beaten side.

It should laso be noted that Kendall successfully converted seven of the nine tries - an impressive return given the extremely difficult kicking conditions.
