Warwick School into last eight of Daily Mail competition

Warwick School’s 1st XV secured their first Daily Mail quarter-final for four years with a commanding performance against Stamford School.

The 12-0 win avenged a 15-5 loss suffered at the hands of Stamford earlier in the season and demonstrated the growing maturity and confidence of the squad.

A first-half try from centre Carrick Waldron was duly converted by Josh Hickman to give Warwick a well deserved half-time lead.

Though Warwick continued to dominate territory and possession in the second half, clear-cut opportunities were few and far between due to the freezing temperatures and difficult underfoot conditions.

With just minutes to go until the final whistle and in a moment of brilliance, Andy Rusher took a short pass from Gerard Rhodes which saw him successfully across the line.

Mark Nasey, director of rugby at Warwick School, said: “We knew the strengths that Stamford had after they beat us earlier in the season and we did our best to counter that.

“Our lineout was superb and we denied them of a lot of possession.

“I also think we dominated the scrum, so in the end it became a case of strangling them of possession which we did quite well.”

As for the quarter-finals, Nasey is resigned to any draw being a tough one. “We’re delighted to be there. Every team will cause other teams problems in the quarter-finals, so we’ll just deal with that challenge when it arrives.”
