Warwick School miss out on Twickenham treble

Backed by 15 coachloads of supporters, Warwick, who won the title in 2013 and 2014, opened the scoring courtesy of a penalty goal from Will Tanner.

However, the West Yorkshire side held the upper hand for the remainder of a tense first half, with their number eight Edan Kelly capping a powerful run with a try for a 5-3 interval lead.

Warwick again scored the first points of the second period, Tanner converting a penalty to edge them into a slender one-point lead.

However, Queen Elizabeth responded well with flanker Max Hanson touching down and converting his own try to make it 12-6.

With five minutes remaining, Hanson made the game safe with another penalty extending the advantage to nine points.

Tom Pierce, Warwick School’s head coach, conceded his side had been beaten by the better team.

“I have to say a massive congratulations to Queen Elizabeth Grammar School,” said Pierce. “They really deserved it on the day.

“They outmuscled us and we didn’t really get our normal game going.

“Although the players are hurting right now I’m sure they will move on very quickly and realise that getting to Twickenham is a fantastic effort in itself.

“They need to hold their heads high.

“They have been absolutely amazing all year.”
