Mayor backs charity bike ride set to wind through Warwickshire streets

The Mayor of the West Midlands has thrown his support behind a charity bike ride that will take in some of Warwickshire's stunning countryside.

Labour politician Richard Parker, who was elected in May, said the Starley Sportive, held annually for the past 11 years, was a ‘great example’ of people from all backgrounds using sport and fitness as a force for good.

Organised by Coventry-based construction and development firm The Deeley Group and Coventry Road Club, the event has raised tens of thousands for various local charities over the years.

Organisers hope that sum will pass the £70,000 mark at this year’s event, which takes place on Sunday, September 22 and is set to attract around 300 riders from across the West Midlands.

Mr Parker made active travel - the practice of completing journeys in physically active ways like walking, wheeling, cycling, or scootering - part of his election manifesto.

The 61-year-old is, therefore, a natural supporter of the Starley Sportive, which will start and finish at Deeley’s George House headquarters in Canley.

“The Starley Sportive is more than a cycling event,” he said. “It’s a great example of our community coming together to support each other.

“With over 300 riders participating, it’s heartening to see so many people making a difference for families in need across our region.

“The funds raised will go a long way in supporting the vital work of local charities that provide essential care when it’s needed most.”

Participants will be able to pick from one of three different routes measuring 29, 63 and 87 miles.

The longest ‘epic’ circuit will meander through Warwickshire before taking in Dover’s Hill in Gloucestershire, which has featured six times in the British Hill Climb Championship.

All proceeds raised will go towards the Zoe’s Place hospice in Coventry, University Hospital Coventry and Warwickshire and Warwickshire and Solihull Blood Bikes.

“Active travel was a key message for Mr Parker during his election campaign so it’s hardly surprising the Starley Sportive, which is all about getting more people out on their bikes, is right up his street!

“We’re expecting another big turnout at what has become one of the most popular dates on the cycling calendar in Coventry and Warwickshire.”

As in previous years, local musicians will perform from a stage at George House giving riders a chance to relax and unwind after crossing the finish line.

The event takes its name from Coventry pioneers John Kemp Starley and James Starley, whose creations paved the way for huge developments in the cycling industry.
