A vampire story with a difference

Playbox Theatre is presenting a new production of the vampire drama, Let The Right One In, opening at The Dream Factory in Shelley Avenue on Thursday November 5.

Adapted for the stage by writer Jack Thorne (This Is England 90) from John Ajvide Lindquist’s Swedish novel and screenplay of the film, the play has only been seen previously in Dundee, London and New York.

Let The Right One In centres on the evolving relationship between Oskar, a lonely and bullied teenage boy and Eli, a centuries-old vampire in teenage form who becomes his friend.

Two actors from Playbox Theatre, 17-year-old Juliette Duffey and 18-year-old Harriet Riley, alternate the role of Eli with Sean Alcock as the victim Oskar.

Consultant director Stewart McGill said: “Let The Right One In is a million miles from Dracula and his bloodsucking family – it is a play of unease and revelation.

“For our production we plan to immerse our audience into a believable community where these things are not only possible but very real.

“Let The Right One In is a huge creative challenge and we relish the opportunity to bring it to Playbox Theatre audiences. It’s only for the hardest souls, however – there will be blood.”

The Times described the stage show as “heartbreakingly pathetic and terrifying”.

Let The Right One In runs until Saturday November 7. It is being performed at 7.30pm each day with a 3pm matinee on the Saturday.
