Experience time of your life at Leamington theatre

Time of my Life by Alan Ayckbourn will be performed at the Leamington theatre from Wednesday to Saturday May 19 at 7.45pm.

Set at the time it was written, in the latter recession-hit Thatcher years, the play premiered in Scarborough in 1992.

It has been brought up-to-date to reflect the similar “contemporary economic conditions”.

The play begins with self-made businessman Gerry Stratton who has organised a small family dinner at his favourite restaurant to celebrate his wife Laura’s birthday.

His son Glyn is there with his long-suffering wife Stephanie, and younger son Adam has brought along his new girlfriend, the outrageously behaved hairdresser Maureen.

It should be a happy occasion but family skeletons emerge. The audience is then taken forward in time with Glyn’s story and back in time with Adam’s.

At the centre Gerry and Laura pick apart their financial problems, their marriage and recall first love.

Vanessa Comer, the play’s director, said: “Ayckbourn so marvellously captures people’s little foibles to great comic effect, putting them in situations which are bizarre yet somehow familiar to most of us ensuring that we leave the theatre both happier and wiser. He is a very clever man.

“He turns us into metaphorical gods who understand only too well the point that Gerry makes – that we humans only recognise our happiest moments when they have long-since become ‘the good old days’.”

The cast includes Rowen Cameron as Maureen, Alex Comer as Glyn, Zoë Faithful as Stephanie, Edward Gildea as Gerry, David Mears as Calvinu and others, Jack Sargent as Adam and Kate Willis as Laura.
