Metropolis: live performance in Leamington of brand new music score

Written for the two-hour version of Fritz Lang’s pioneering screenplay, Morykit’s score was premiered in London, where it received a standing ovation. A classically-trained composer of original music for film, theatre, dance and public performance, Dmytro has says he has always loved Metropolis - which was the first science fiction film and is said to have inspired Ridley Scott when he directed Blade Runner and Alien.

He said: “It got me in touch with a lot of music that I’ve written over the past 30 years. It was a lot of work - I did it in chunks over several weeks.

“It has to run musically to make sense with the film, so it’s quite a long process but it’s something I love doing - putting my music to a visual - and this particular visual is such an iconic film.”

Dmytro, who says he turned to music to resolve his personal identity struggles over growing up in the UK with Ukranian and Italian parents, modified 19 previous compositions and wrote two new pieces especially for the film. He added: “So far the audience response has been quite exhilarating, both in Perthshire and London, so I’m looking forward to playing to new audiences.”

Fritz Lang’s 1927 silent film was made in Germany during the Weimar Period and, set in a futuristic urban dystopia, follows the attempts of Freder, the wealthy son of the city’s ruler, and Maria, whose background is not fully explained, to overcome the vast gulf separating the classes of their city.
